We set up this website to inform you more fully about an issue that is impacting our community. We are sorry this has happened. We understand your frustrations and concerns, and we appreciate your patience. The problem is being fixed.
As you know, Century Aluminum Mt. Holly is one of America’s largest aluminum producers. While raw aluminum is our end product, the production process also creates some dust that we capture and reuse in our production process.
Certain units that capture that dust recently had a malfunction and some of that dust was emitted into the air. Some of you living near our plant may have seen it settle on your cars or lawn. This dust is alumina (technically referred to as aluminum oxide).
Since we discovered this issue, we have been in constant contact with our regulators, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), which has been on site. Along with a large number of additional company personnel, we have also had contractors on site 24 hours-a-day to pinpoint the problem, make needed repairs, monitor emissions to ensure we continue to operate well within permitted limits and stay ahead of any additional issues before they arise.
We understand how important this is for you. Many of our 468 employees live here. This is where Mt. Holly has called home for more than 40 years and want to continue to operate here for at least another 40. We have created this website to answer your questions and keep you updated.
